The European eel is on the brink of extinction, with its population declining drastically in just a few decades. Despite clear warnings from scientists to stop fishing, politicians seem indifferent. Lengthy and ineffective measures persist, yet it’s evident: until the European eel has truly recovered and its natural habitats have been restored, all fishing must be stopped!

There is hardly another species on our planet that goes through such a complex life cycle. To date, however, the spawning behavior of eels has not been fully understood and the exact location where the eels meet in the middle of the ocean to reproduce is a mystery.
European eels are born in the open Atlantic, in an area called the Sargasso Sea.
At this point, the tiny eels are only about seven centimeters in size and completely transparent.
When the eels reach sexual maturity, they undergo another metamorphosis, during which their back turns silver, large eyes and a more pointed head form.
Without eating even once, they travel the entire distance only to reproduce at the end and then actually die. So eels only reproduce once, at the very end of their amazing life.
